Light in a Darkened World
With the way the world is today, it’s no wonder that we as believers look to the Heavens and wonder when the Lord is coming back. Over the last few years there has been a steady decline in the level of positive and with Satan being the ruler of the air, it is only a matter of time before it only gets worse.
In His word, God calls us to be a light in a darkened world. Many Christians today are unfamiliar with that term therefore are not rising up to the challenge. It is more than a good thing to do nowadays, it is our duty as children of the most High to go out and put on our best smiles and show the love of Jesus Christ to those that are in need of it. It doesn’t have to be a big thing you do to let your light shine. It can be something as simple as a hello with a bright smile to the stranger passing you by on the sidewalk.
You never know what’s on their heart. That smile you just gave them could be the one thing they needed more than anything else that day. It could be the only “light” poking through their darkness. You never know. There has been times in my life that I have, even as a believer, felt down and out and wondered if anyone even cared anymore and then along comes someone who shows me a little kindness and it makes all the difference in the world.
Try it the next time you’re out somewhere. Watch the other person’s face brighten at your kind gesture. See how good it makes you feel when you see how it affects them. Even if it’s only for a moment.
God also knows our needs. He knows in this day and age how hard it is to freely plant seeds in other’s lives when it’s difficult enough to keep strong in our own, but when you show the world that sliver of light shining within you, God repays any kindness you give by ten fold. He promises you that so go ahead and give it a try. What do you have to lose but a few moments of your time?
If smiling and saying hello to perfect strangers isn’t your thing, then there are may other ways you can let the light within you shine through. Below is a list of ideas I’ve put together to get you started:
1. As you go through the drive-thru at your favorite fast food restaurant find out how much the person behind you in line owes for their lunch and if you can afford it, go ahead and pay for their meal. You can also go as far as writing them a little note and let them know that Jesus loves them and hope they have a blessed day. You don’t have to deal with anyone face to face, but by looking in the rear-view mirror as you pull away, you’ll be able to see the impact your kind gesture made in their life. This one was a suggestion my local Christian radio station made and when anyone did it, they recorded their response…the testimonies that poured in were amazing!
2. Grab a trash bag and go to the local park and walk around and pick up all of the trash you see laying around. Again, you might not run into anyone who will personally thank you, but someone at some point will notice and appreciate it. Not only are you making the world a cleaner place to be but some child might be a little bit safer because of it.
3. Think of a nursing home in your community you can help out and put together as many bags as you can afford with the following ingredients - travel sizes of toothpaste, shampoo & conditioner, maybe a cheap toothbrush and any other travel size personal hygiene item you can think of that might come in handy. When you drop them off, maybe you could have a little note inside the bags to encourage the ones that receive it. You don’t have to know them or see them face to face but telling them something kind might be just what they need to make it through another day…
This partial list is just the beginning of things you can do to touch another person’s life. I challenge you to put on your thinking cap and come up with a few more. Literally there are hundreds of ideas you can come up with to make a difference in the world around you. Why don’t you sit down and think of one thing you can easily do today and go out and make it happen. What you decide on might seem small to you but not to the person you touch. Once you’ve accomplished it, write to me and tell me your story. Every story I receive (if I have your permission) will be posted on my website, www.kfjbooks.com for all to enjoy.
Thank you so much for reading this. Now go out there and let your light shine!
